Heeralal Samariya

The Central government has formally appointed Heeralal Samariya, a 1985 batch IAS officer, as the new Chief Information Commissioner (CIC). Administered by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the oath of office solidifies Samariya as the first Dalit person to hold this prestigious post.

Born on September 14, 1960, in the village of Pahadi, Bharatpur district, Rajasthan, Heeralal Samariya is an accomplished administrator with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Graduating with honors from MNIT Jaipur Rajasthan University in 1982, he entered the Indian Administrative Service in 1985, serving in the Telangana cadre.

Samariya’s expertise in administration and governance is evident from his distinguished career. He has held key positions, including Secretary and Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Labor and Employment. His leadership roles extend to being CMD of the Electricity Distribution Company in Andhra Pradesh, CMD of the Andhra Pradesh Transmission Corporation, and Secretary of the Irrigation Department.

This historic appointment marks a significant milestone, as Heeralal Samariya becomes the first Dalit individual to assume the role of Chief Information Commissioner. His commitment to public service is a family affair, with his son, Piyush Samaria, also serving as an IAS officer.
