Mustard Research Center

Rapeseed-Mustard is the important crop in the word; India is the third largest producer of rapeseed-mustard after China and Canada. Rapeseed-Mustard is one of the second largest oilseed crop in India. the crop is grown in almost 24 states for domestic use as well commercial purposes. Realizing the importance of the Rapeseed-Mustard in country, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) established the National Research Centre on Rapeseed-Mustard (NRCRM) on October 20, 1993 at the site of an Adaptive Trial Centre, Government of Rajasthan, and Located at Sewar, Bharatpur to carry out basic, strategic and applied research. To augment the production and productivity of rapeseed-mustard across the country, the all india coordinated research Project on Rapeseed-Mustard (AICRPRM) with 11 main, 13 sub and 22 verification centres was also brought under its umbrella. In February 2009, the ICAR re-designated NRCRM as the Directorate of Rapeseed Mustard Research (DRMR). The DRMR functions as a fulcrum to support the production system research for rapeseed (Brown sarson, yellow sarson, toria, taramira, gobhi sarson) and mustard (black mustard, Ethiopian mustard and Indian mustard) group of crops creating desired research and service & support units (see organogram).

The DRMR is playing an important role in sustainable production of rapeseed-mustard in India through its research and extension activities. India holding third position in rapeseed-mustard production in world after Canada and China, during 2013-14, in India the production of 32.8 million tonnes of oilseed could be achieved due to 7.9 million tonnes production of rapeseed-mustard. Challenge before DRMR is to increase the level of sufficiency in edible oil consumption in changing food habit of ever-growing population in our country with increase or achieve the potential yield cultivars through developing ecologically sound and economically viable agro production and protection technologies fo different climatic conditions.

National Research Centre on Rapeseed-Mustard (NRCRM) was established to provide a strong leadership to the rapeseed-mustard research activities in the country and for promoting mission oriented basic, strategic and applied research during 8th plan at Bharatpur. NRCRM also has under its umbrella, All India Coordinated Research Project on
Rapeseed-Mustard with 22 research and 11
verification centres across the country. It is
mandated to act as National repository for rapeseedmustard genetic resources, conduct basic, strategic
and applied research to improve the productivity,
quality of oil and seed meal, develop ecologically
sound and economically viable agro-production and
protection technologies for different situations,
generate location specific, interdisciplinary
information based on multilocation testing and
coordiation, establish linkages and promotion of
cooperation with national and international agencies
and extend technical expertise and consultancies.
